Pursuant to resolution 43/65 , the UN Secretary-General issued the study , which includes steps and measures that could be taken by regional states to facilitate the establishment of the nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. It also suggested a number of confidence-building measures, as well as elements that could be included in a final agreement for a nuclear-weapon-free zone the Middle East and concluded that the zone is a “goal that can be reached”.

The geographic delimitation of the zone contained in the study – all member states of the League of Arab States, Iran and Israel - is still used today by most as the working definition of the zone delineation.
